April 20 and 21, 1918 - Liberty Loan Parade and Norma Talmadge

Today's headlines in the Sunday April 21 The Philadelphia Inquirer cover yesterday's Liberty Loan Parade in Philly, which Mary attended.  One of the highlights was the presence of the President's wife, Edith Wilson.

After the parade Mary went to the movies to see Norma Talmadge in Ghosts of Yesterday (which Mary calls "Ghosts of the Past"), which was a "dandy picture".  The film, minus the last two reels, is housed at the Library of Congress.

Norma Talmadge (born 1894, died 1957)  was a very successful silent movie actress.  Like many others, however, her film career more or less ended with the introduction of talking pictures.  There is a thorough biography of Norma's professional career (and that of her actress sister, Constance) at Women Film Pioneers Project.
