April 19, 1918 - Mary Pickford

Today our Mary went by herself to see Mary Pickford in the moving picture, Amarilly of Clothes Line Alley.  Clearly our Mary admired Mary Pickford and wanted to be like her.  "Mary is clever.  There is no getting away from it.  And I should be glad to be one hundredth as clever."

Mary Pickford (born 1892 in Toronto, Canada and died  1979 in Santa Monica, California) was the most popular actress of the time.  By 1916 she was making $10,000 per week.  By 1919 she joined with Douglas Fairbanks (whom she later married), Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith to form the United Artists film production company.  Her last film, Star Night at the Cocoanut Grove was released in 1934.

The Mary Pickford Foundation has a wealth of information about her.
