October 28, 1918 - Influenza, Eddie Rickenbacker

The flu continues to decline.  Today's Evening Public Ledger documents that the number of daily influenza-related deaths in Philadelphia peaked on October 15 at 711 and that Philadelphia sustained a total of 10,822 flu-related deaths from September 30 to October 24.  There would be another nearly 2,000 deaths from influenza in Philadelphia by the spring of 1919.  There were approximately 1.7 million residents of Philadelphia in 1918.  About 1 out of every 140 Philadelphia residents would die from influenza and pneumonia during 1918-1919 pandemic.
