September 2, 1918 - Gasless Sundays

In addition to the other usually voluntary but strongly recommended limits are rationing for citizens during the war, yesterday was the first "gasless Sunday", a day where pleasure car rides were to be avoided.  Yet Mary just outside of Philadelphia on her Labor Day holiday "went to Langhorn in Downey's machine...."  This from the September 2 Evening Public Ledger:
 

Also in today's The Philadelphia Inquirer, there is front page report that an "Assassin's Bullet Proves Deadly to Premier Lenine".  This turned out to be a false report.  Although Vladimir Lenin (identified as Nikolai Lenine) in the paper was in fact shot twice as reported, he survived the assassination attempt.  More at History.com.
