Throughout Mary O'Neill's diary, the pervasive longing for her mysterious soldier beau regularly appears. He is "someone I love dearly, but perhaps shouldn't who is (over there) doing his bit." They probably are not engaged to be wed, but her entries imply a commitment, at least on her part, to a dedicated future together. On February 7 she receives a card from Frank, apparently written during a rest or recuperative break in Monte Carlo. Her entry for the day ends, as is often the case, with a poem about Frank. In this instance, while having the received the "surprise" card, she bemoans the fact he did not "try to send a little letter."
Frank's last name is not revealed until much later in the diary.
