Today Mary spends the evening attending the movies to see Bessie Barriscale in Patriotism, which Mary enjoyed.
Barriscale (1884 [or 1885]-1965), born Elizabeth Barry Scale, was a stage actress before performing on the silent screen in 1913. She was the founder of Bessie Barriscale Productions, which produced Patriotism, a film which has since been lost. Columbia University's Women Film Pioneers Project has details of her biography.
While newspapers document the increasing losses and retreats sustained by the Germans in France, there are hints of the influenza pandemic to come. This from the July 3 Evening Public Ledger:
Only a few references to the influenza appear in the August Philadelphia papers, mostly brief and at times sarcastic.
