July 16, 1928 - Earle Williams
In addition to school (on the comptometer) and visits from family members, Mary went to the movies this evening. While she does not say specifically which movie or theater she attended, she mentions seeing Earle Williams. "I enjoyed the picture because I like Mr. Williams (in the pictures). He reminds me so much of someone I used to know." The latter is a likely sarcastic reference to her beau Frankie, who continues to serve in France.
The Earle Williams movie playing in town at the time was "The Stolen Treaty". More about that in And Then I Went to Bed: A 1918 Philadelphia Diary. Earle Williams was a popular movie star from 1908 until his death at age 47 in 1927. He was considered the most popular star in 1915. He was considered a dapper romantic lead and was often paired with actress Anita Stewart (1895-1961).
